Edgar Martínez

Edgar Martínez is recognized as one of the top hitters in Major League Baseball history, known for his consistent performance and dedication to the sport. Martínez spent his entire 18-year career with the Seattle Mariners, establishing himself as the franchise's leading offensive player. He overcame strabismus, an eye condition, and advanced from a $4,000 contract to a Hall of Fame career. After signing with the Mariners, Martínez spent seven seasons in the minor leagues, with periodic call-ups to the majors, before becoming Seattle's third baseman.

Martínez was a seven-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He finished his career with a .312 batting average, 309 home runs, and 1,261 RBI. He became the third right-handed batter in history to record seven consecutive seasons with a .300 average, .400 on-base percentage, and .500 slugging percentage. Martínez is one of only six players with at least 300 home runs, 500 doubles, a career batting average of at least .300, a career OBP of at least .400, and a career slugging percentage of at least .500. He holds several Seattle franchise records, including most games played, hits, doubles, runs scored, RBI, and walks.

A defining moment in Martínez's career occurred during the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees, when his two-run, 11th-inning double in Game 5 sent Seattle to the American League Championship Series for the first time. He led the American League in RBI with 145 and contributed to the Mariners' 116-win season. Martínez won the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award five times in a seven-year span, and Major League Baseball later renamed the DH of the Year award the Edgar Martínez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award. He also received the Roberto Clemente Award, becoming the first Puerto Rican player to earn the honor.

Martínez's path to the Baseball Hall of Fame was marked by perseverance, ultimately being inducted after receiving 85.4 percent of the vote in his final year of eligibility. The Mariners retired his number 11, making him one of two players to receive this honor from the club, alongside Ken Griffey Jr. Martínez detailed his career and personal journey in his autobiography, "Edgar: An Autobiography."

Martínez continues to contribute to baseball as the senior director of hitting strategy for the Mariners, working with players including Julio Rodríguez.
