Eddie Olczyk

Eddie Olczyk is a towering figure in American sports, distinguished by a career that spans sixteen NHL seasons, a tenure in coaching, and a decorated second act as a premier broadcaster and horse racing analyst. Selected third overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft as the first American-born player ever taken by the Chicago Blackhawks, his professional journey began shortly after competing for the U.S. Olympic men's hockey team in Sarajevo. Over the course of 1,031 career games, he recorded 794 points while playing for iconic franchises including the Blackhawks, Maple Leafs, and Penguins, eventually reaching the pinnacle of the sport as a Stanley Cup Champion with the 1994 New York Rangers.

A member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, Olczyk still holds the record for the longest consecutive-game point streak by an American-born player at 18 games. Following his retirement as a player, he transitioned to the bench to serve as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins for two seasons before moving into the broadcast booth. He made history as the first American-born lead hockey analyst, a role in which he has earned multiple Emmy Awards for individual excellence. Today, he serves as a lead national broadcaster for the NHL on TNT and provides local commentary for Seattle Kraken games, having also covered multiple Olympic Games.

Beyond the rink, Olczyk is a renowned Thoroughbred horse racing handicapper and analyst. His broadcasting debut in the equestrian world occurred during a professional hockey labor dispute, and he has since become a fixture at the sport’s most prestigious events. He has provided expert analysis for the Breeders' Cup, Royal Ascot, and the historic Triple Crown runs of American Pharoah and Justify. His instincts at the track are legendary; he once famously turned a $166 Pick 6 investment into a winning ticket worth nearly $500,000.

In 2017, Olczyk faced a profound personal challenge when he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. After undergoing surgery and rigorous treatment, he triumphantly announced he was cancer-free. He chronicled this battle, along with his life in the sport, in his memoir, "Eddie Olczyk: Beating the Odds in Hockey and in Life". His public journey and resilience have made him a powerful advocate for the "Hockey Fights Cancer" initiative, where he serves as a leading voice for awareness and support.

Olczyk continues to shape the future of the sport as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
