Dr. Dwight K. Nelson is a Seventh-day Adventist evangelist, author, and pastor whose four-decade ministry has made him a recognized voice in the faith community. Nelson served as the senior pastor of Pioneer Memorial Church on the campus of Andrews University, where he led the congregation for more than 30 years. In addition to his pastoral work, he is an author, adjunct professor at the Seminary, and communicator known for his intellectually engaged preaching that has reached audiences across the Adventist world and beyond.
A fifth-generation Adventist and fourth-generation pastor, Nelson grew up in the faith. He graduated from Southern Missionary College, now Southern Adventist University, attended Andrews University where he received a Master of Divinity degree, and later earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Before joining Andrews University, Nelson served as a pastor in Oregon for 10 years. His academic background and pastoral experience contributed to one of the longest tenures in Adventist church history.
As lead pastor of Pioneer Memorial Church at Andrews University, Nelson guided the diverse Andrews community through preaching, leadership, and example. He served as the preacher for the Adventist satellite evangelistic series "The NeXt Millennium Seminar" and hosted television programs such as "The Evidence" and "New Perceptions," as well as discussion-style series like "Evidence: Through My Experience" and "Mind The Gap" at Newbold College. Nelson was also the key speaker of NET '98, described by Ministry magazine as the largest evangelistic event ever undertaken by a Christian church. He shifted the focus of that series from the apocalyptic to the relational, choosing the theme "Finding a forever friendship with God."
Pioneer Memorial Church hosted ABC Television's National Christmas Eve service, expanding Nelson's reach to audiences beyond his denomination. In addition to his pastoral role, Nelson served as an adjunct teacher of homiletics at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews. He is known for addressing current events and integrating relevant topics into sermons about enduring values.
As an author, Nelson has written books including "Outrageous Grace," "Countdown to the Showdown," "Built to Last," "Pursuing the Passion of Jesus," "The Eleventh Commandment," "The Claim," and "The Chosen." His body of work spans evangelism, theology, and practical Christian living. Nelson's career demonstrates the impact of sustained, purposeful leadership in faith-based community service and Christian ministry.
