Dusty Baker

Dusty Baker, known formally as Johnnie B. Baker Jr., is a prominent figure in Major League Baseball, recognized for his contributions as both a player and a manager over more than five decades. Baker played in MLB for 19 seasons, most notably with the Los Angeles Dodgers. During his tenure with the Dodgers, he was a two-time All-Star, earned two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove Award, and became the first National League Championship Series MVP for his performance during the National League Championship Series. He made three World Series appearances and was part of the Dodgers' World Series championship team. Baker recorded nearly 2,000 hits, drove in more than 1,000 runs, and maintained a .278 batting average over his career, which began at age 19 with the Atlanta Braves—sharing the outfield with Hank Aaron—and concluded with the Oakland Athletics.

After retiring as a player, Baker transitioned to managing, becoming the youngest manager in MLB when he was hired by the San Francisco Giants. In his first year as Giants manager, he won the National League Manager of the Year Award, leading the team to a 103–59 record, a 31-game improvement from the previous season. Baker later managed the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and Houston Astros. He is a three-time National League Manager of the Year and the only manager in MLB history to lead five different teams to the postseason and to win division titles with five different clubs.

Baker's managerial career reached a pinnacle when he guided the Houston Astros to a World Series championship, becoming the oldest manager to win the Fall Classic. He also became the first Black manager and 12th overall in MLB history to achieve 2,000 career wins. Baker is among a select group to win the World Series as both a player and a manager in the divisional era. He is also the oldest manager or head coach in MLB, NBA, NFL, or NHL history to win a championship. After taking over the Astros following a leadership change, Baker played a significant role in restoring the team's credibility.

Baker's regular-season managerial record includes 2,183 wins, 1,862 losses, and a .540 winning percentage, ranking seventh on the all-time wins list behind Connie Mack, Tony La Russa, John McGraw, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre, and Sparky Anderson. Baseball Digest honored Baker with its Lifetime Achievement Award after his retirement, recognizing his 56 years in Major League Baseball as a player, coach, and manager. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has described Baker as a leader and ambassador for the sport.

Following his retirement from managing, Baker joined the Giants' front office and was named manager of Team Nicaragua for the World Baseball Classic. He has also been inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. Baker continues to share insights on leadership, high performance, and teamwork, drawing from his extensive experience in professional baseball. His journey from a teenage outfielder alongside Hank Aaron to the oldest championship manager in North American professional sports positions him as a respected and influential voice in baseball.
