Dr. Roman V. Yampolskiy

Roman V. Yampolskiy is a computer scientist recognized for his contributions to artificial intelligence safety. He serves as a tenured associate professor at the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering, where he founded and directs the Cyber Security Lab. Yampolskiy introduced the term AI safety in the publication "Artificial Intelligence Safety Engineering: Why Machine Ethics Is a Wrong Approach," presented at the Philosophy and Theory of Artificial Intelligence conference in Thessaloniki, Greece. He holds a combined BS/MS degree in computer science from Rochester Institute of Technology and a PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University at Buffalo, where he was awarded a National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship fellowship.

Yampolskiy is known for research on AI containment, AI safety engineering, and the theoretical limits of artificial intelligence controllability. He established the field of intellectology, which analyzes the forms and limits of intelligence, with artificial intelligence as a subfield. He has served as a fellow and research advisor at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, an AI safety fellow at the Foresight Institute, and a research associate at the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute. His work has received funding from organizations including the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security, EA Ventures, and the Future of Life Institute. Yampolskiy joined other AI researchers in signing "Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter."

Yampolskiy has authored more than 200 publications, including journal articles and books on artificial intelligence. His major works include "Artificial Superintelligence: A Futuristic Approach," "Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security," and "AI: Unexplainable, Unpredictable, Uncontrollable," which examines the limits of artificial intelligence safety. His research has been cited by thousands of scientists and featured in media reports across multiple languages. He was one of five global experts on AI featured in a New York Times article.

Yampolskiy received the Guardian Award from the Lifeboat Foundation for work in existential risk, as well as the Outstanding Early Career in Post-Secondary Education Award and the Excellence in Science Education and Outreach Award. He has appeared on the Lex Fridman Podcast to discuss superintelligent AI, on Steven Bartlett's "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, and on CNN to address the future of the workforce amid AI advancement. He was also a guest on Joe Rogan's podcast. Yampolskiy is frequently invited to speak at conferences and events worldwide on topics related to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the societal impact of emerging technologies.
