Robert Montgomery, MD, DPhil is the H. Leon Pachter Professor of Surgery, Chair of the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and Director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute. A world-renowned transplant surgeon, Dr. Montgomery pioneered innovations in living-donor kidney transplantation, including laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and complex multi-way kidney swaps. He has performed more than 1,000 kidney transplants and remains a global leader in transplant innovation.
Dr. Montgomery has also led groundbreaking efforts in xenotransplantation—the transplantation of organs or tissues between different species. In 2021, he directed the first successful transplant of a genetically engineered pig kidney into a human decedent, followed by the first pig kidney transplant into a living human patient. These breakthroughs earned him the 2024 Jacobson Innovation Award and recognition as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2025.
A heart transplant recipient himself, Dr. Montgomery brings deep personal insight to his clinical practice. He is a committed educator, researcher, and NIH-funded investigator whose contributions to transplant medicine continue to shape the field and save lives worldwide.
