Dr. Michel Poulain is a Belgian demographer recognized for his expertise in human longevity and as a co-founder of the Blue Zones concept. Trained in astrophysics at the University of Liège, Poulain earned a doctorate in demography at UCLouvain in Belgium. His work has focused on international migration statistics and longevity studies, contributing to the harmonization of migration data at the European Union and global levels with the International Organization for Migration.
Poulain served as president of Société Belge de Démographie and later the Association Internationale des Démographes de Langue Française. His career in longevity research began with the verification of age claims in Sardinia, where, alongside physician Gianni Pes, he investigated centenarians in Ogliastra. Their method of marking validated cases with a blue pen led to the identification of areas now known as "blue zones." In collaboration with Dan Buettner, the Blue Zones concept was expanded to include Okinawa in Japan, Loma Linda in California, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, and Ikaria in Greece. The findings from Sardinia were published in the AKEA study, which identified a geographic area with extreme longevity.
Poulain has contributed to centenarian studies as a member of the International Database on Longevity and the International Centenarian Consortium. He has validated the ages of supercentenarians such as Antonio Todde, Johan Riudavets, and Emma Morano, and has also disproved several longevity claims, including those from the Caucasus. Poulain has conducted research in 95 countries, identifying new longevity hotspots. Four Blue Zones—Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, and Ikaria—have been formally validated, with Martinique identified as an emerging area of interest.
Poulain continues to advance longevity science through research and publication. In collaboration with Anne Herm of the University of Tallinn, he published an analysis on lifespan differences among Okinawans born before and after World War II. Poulain also contributed to the development of a formal definition for Blue Zones. He is the founder of Living Blue Zone, a nonprofit organization focused on healthy longevity, and holds positions as professor emeritus at UCLouvain and senior researcher at the Estonian Institute for Population Studies at Tallinn University.
As an international speaker and professor, Poulain has presented Blue Zones research to audiences worldwide, addressing topics in aging, lifestyle, and public health. His career spans astrophysics, demography, and fieldwork in longevity science, establishing him as a leading voice in the study of aging and population health.
