Dr. K.L. Allen

Dr. K.L. Allen is a higher education leader and Army National Guard veteran with a career focused on expanding access to affordable, workforce-aligned education. Allen holds a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice, a Master of Business Administration in global management, and a doctorate in educational leadership. His doctoral research examined employee engagement, socioeconomics, and leadership. Service in the Army National Guard provided Allen with experience in discipline and resilience, shaping his commitment to systems that recognize and develop potential across diverse populations.

Throughout his career in higher education, Allen has established departments in business development and veteran affairs, taught courses in business, economics, and education, and held leadership positions at multiple institutions. He has served on boards and advisory committees supporting education and entrepreneurship, including Chambers of Commerce in Ohio. Allen’s expertise in strategic planning, policy development, and stakeholder engagement has positioned him as a recognized voice in higher education and workforce development.

Allen joined WGU as chancellor of WGU Ohio and regional director for the central region, leading WGU Ohio to significant enrollment growth. He oversees university operations across 12 states along the Eastern Seaboard, including Washington D.C., guiding the strategic direction of the online, nonprofit university. Allen plays a key role in building partnerships that expand higher education access, particularly for historically underrepresented student populations.

As a veteran, Allen advocates for military-connected learners in higher education. He has appeared on programs such as "Good Morning Washington" to discuss how higher education supports veterans and active-duty service members transitioning to civilian life, and on Fox Baltimore to highlight how WGU’s programs prepare veterans for the workforce.
