Dr. Eva Fogelman is a renowned psychologist, author, filmmaker, and trailblazer in the study of Holocaust trauma and its intergenerational impact. Born in a displaced persons camp in Kassel, Germany, to Holocaust survivor parents, she spent part of her childhood in Israel before immigrating to the United States in 1959.
Dr. Fogelman earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Brooklyn College, a master's in rehabilitation counseling from New York University, and a Ph.D. in social and developmental psychology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She also completed advanced training in family therapy and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
In the mid-1970s, she helped lead the first short-term therapy groups for children of Holocaust survivors in Boston and later in Jerusalem. This early work was instrumental in launching the Second Generation movement, giving voice and healing to descendants of survivors.
She is the author of the widely acclaimed book Conscience and Courage: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust, which profiles non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during World War II. This work led to her co-founding the Jewish Foundation for Christian Rescuers, now known as the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, which continues to support rescuers in need.
Dr. Fogelman wrote and co-produced the PBS documentary Breaking the Silence: The Generation After the Holocaust, and contributed to the Academy Award-nominated film Liberators: Fighting on Two Fronts in World War II. She has also co-edited important academic works, including Children During the Nazi Reign and Children in the Holocaust and Its Aftermath, based on the Kestenberg Archive.
In her New York City private practice, she specializes in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families, and groups, focusing on trauma, identity, and intergenerational effects of the Holocaust. She has also trained mental health professionals to work with communities impacted by historical trauma, including Armenian, Native American, African American, and Southeast Asian populations.
Dr. Fogelman is co-director of Child Development Research and has served as an advisor to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She has lectured internationally at top academic institutions and contributed widely to both scholarly and popular publications.
Through her lifelong dedication to trauma healing, Holocaust education, and moral courage, Dr. Eva Fogelman has left a powerful legacy across psychology, education, and social justice.
