Dr. David Rhew

Dr. David C. Rhew serves as the global chief medical officer and vice president of healthcare for Microsoft, where he leads initiatives at the intersection of medicine, digital health, and technology. Rhew holds Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science and cellular molecular biology from the University of Michigan, an MD from Northwestern University, and completed his internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He completed fellowships in health services research at Cedars-Sinai and infectious diseases at the University of California, Los Angeles. Rhew has served as a clinician and researcher at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and RAND, and as associate clinical professor of medicine at UCLA.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Rhew held leadership roles in the health technology sector, including chief medical officer and vice president for enterprise healthcare at Samsung. He contributed to the development of evidence-based order sets in electronic health records at Zynx Health and advanced home-based cardiac rehabilitation programs at Samsung. At Microsoft, Rhew leads a team focused on leveraging large-scale, data-driven approaches to improve clinical decision-making, proactive care, health outcomes, and cost efficiency. He co-holds six U.S. technology patents related to clinical decision support integration in electronic health records.

Rhew has played a key role in major health technology initiatives, including serving as Microsoft's international coordinator for pandemic response. In this capacity, he collaborated with the World Health Organization on the World Health Data Hub, the Centers for Disease Control on vaccine data infrastructure, and U.S. states on COVID-19 vaccine rollout. He also co-founded the Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (TRAIN), a health AI governance network focused on the safe, equitable, and effective deployment of artificial intelligence in healthcare, and the Rural Health Transformation Collaborative.

Beyond Microsoft, Rhew serves as chairman of the Health and Fitness Technology Division for the Consumer Technology Association and sits on CTA's Board of Industry Leaders. He has served on the National Quality Forum's executive committee for consensus standards and approval, AdvaMed's Digital Health Board, and the governing committee for NESTcc, the medical device advisory group for the FDA, CMS, and NIH. Rhew is a member of the board of directors of IgniteData, a company specializing in clinical trial data automation, and is an adjunct professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Rhew has been recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the 50 most influential clinician executives. His work spans digital health, artificial intelligence in healthcare, clinical informatics, and health equity, positioning him as a leading voice in the advancement of healthcare technology and policy.
