Doug Williams

Doug Williams is recognized as a significant figure in the history of American professional football. As a quarterback at Grambling State University under coach Eddie Robinson, Williams passed for more than 8,000 yards and 93 touchdowns, leading the Tigers to three Black College National Championships. In his senior year, he led the nation in touchdown passes with 38 and passing yards with 3,286, earning All-America honors from the Associated Press and finishing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. Williams was selected 17th overall in the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming the first African American quarterback chosen in the first round.

With Tampa Bay, Williams started 10 games during his rookie season, including one played with a broken jaw, and was named to the NFL's All-Rookie team. Over five seasons, he led the Buccaneers to their first three playoff appearances, an NFC Championship Game, and the team's first NFC Central title. After a stint with the USFL's Oklahoma Outlaws, Williams returned to the NFL with the Washington Redskins, reuniting with coach Joe Gibbs. Williams was named the starting quarterback entering the playoffs, where he made a lasting impact.

Williams became the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl, leading Washington to victory in Super Bowl XXII. He completed nine of 11 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns in a single quarter, helping turn a 10-0 deficit into a 35-10 lead. Williams set or tied several Super Bowl passing records, including most touchdown passes (four), most passing yards (340), longest pass completion (80 yards), and longest touchdown pass (80 yards). He was named Super Bowl MVP, becoming the first African American quarterback to earn the honor.

After his playing career, Williams moved into coaching and football operations. In his first tenure as head coach at Grambling State, Williams compiled a 52-18 record, leading the Tigers to three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and three National Black College Championships. He later held multiple senior roles in the Washington Commanders front office and serves as Senior Advisor to the team president, providing guidance on organizational strategy and identity.

Williams has also contributed to expanding opportunities in football and education. Alongside Shack Harris, he established The Shack Harris & Doug Williams Foundation, supporting after-school programs, leadership development, mentoring, and minority higher education assistance. Williams and Harris founded the Black College Football Hall of Fame and the HBCU Legacy Bowl, which hosts the NFL's HBCU Combine. The Washington Commanders created the Doug Williams Diversity Coaching Fellowship to support coaches from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Williams has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor, and the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame. Williams continues to influence the sport as a leader, mentor, and advocate for diversity in football.
