Doris Rivera-Black

Doris Rivera-Black is an activist, author, and survivor of sexual assault and domestic violence whose personal journey informs her advocacy against gender-based violence. Rivera-Black served as a deputy sheriff with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and brings a decade of law enforcement experience, including roles in jail operations, patrol, parole, and as an instructor at a law enforcement training academy. Her background in both law enforcement and survivorship provides a perspective on the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Rivera-Black is the author of the autobiography "Clothed in Strength," which recounts her relationship with her ex-husband and her escape from abuse. The memoir, published by Xulon Press, serves as both a personal account and a resource for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Rivera-Black began her public speaking career by sharing her story on the Oprah Winfrey Show and has appeared on Focus on the Family's Daily Broadcast Show and other media outlets. She is a keynote speaker addressing topics such as law enforcement response to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, sexual assault awareness, domestic violence dynamics, and hope and healing for survivors.

Rivera-Black founded NEVER a Victim, a program focused on situational awareness, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, and self-defense for women. She co-founded All Hope Restored, a faith-based domestic violence support group, and has been involved with TESSA of Colorado Springs and the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault's Survivor Task Force. Rivera-Black was selected by the Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime, as a National Victim/Survivor Impact Consultant. Through her writing, public speaking, and community programs, Rivera-Black works to educate, support, and advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
