Doris Kearns Goodwin

Doris Kearns Goodwin is a presidential historian, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and New York Times No. 1 bestselling writer whose work has influenced how Americans understand their history and the leaders who shaped it. Goodwin's career as a presidential historian and author began when, as a graduate student at Harvard, she was selected to join the White House Fellows program. Despite having co-authored an article calling for the removal of President Lyndon B. Johnson from office, Johnson invited Goodwin to work at the White House, where she later assisted him in writing his memoirs. Goodwin earned a doctorate in government from Harvard University, where she taught government, including a course on the American presidency.

Goodwin's account of the Johnson presidency, "Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream," established her national reputation as a historian. She received the Pulitzer Prize for History for her book "No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Home Front During World War II." "No Ordinary Time" also received the Harold Washington Literary Award, the New England Bookseller Association Award, the Ambassador Book Award, and The Washington Monthly Book Award. Her book "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" explores President Lincoln's relationships with his cabinet and became a national bestseller, winning the Lincoln Prize and the inaugural Book Prize for American History. "Team of Rivals" served as the primary source for the film "Lincoln."

Goodwin's other books include the Carnegie Medal winner "The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism." Her work has been recognized with honors such as the Lincoln Prize, the National Endowment for the Humanities' Charles Frankel Prize, the New England Book Award, and the Carl Sandburg Literary Award. Goodwin was the first historian to receive the Lincoln Leadership Prize from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation. Her book "An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s" became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller and is being developed as a feature film.

In addition to her writing, Goodwin executive produced the documentary miniseries "Washington" for History Channel, with additional miniseries on Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt. Goodwin has served as a consultant and has been interviewed for documentaries on Presidents Johnson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln, the Kennedy family, and on Ken Burns' "The History of Baseball" and "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History."
