Don Sweeney

Don Sweeney is a prominent figure in Boston Bruins history, contributing to the franchise as both a player and an executive. Before his professional hockey career, Sweeney developed his skills at Harvard University, earning NCAA East All-American and ECAC First Team All-Star honors and competing in the NCAA Finals. He graduated with a degree in economics.

Sweeney was selected by the Bruins in the eighth round of the NHL Entry Draft and completed his college education before joining the National Hockey League. He played more than 1,100 NHL games, primarily with the Bruins, including 15 seasons and 1,051 games for Boston. Sweeney is one of four players—and two defensemen—in team history to play in over 1,000 games. Among all-time Bruins defensemen, he ranks tenth in career goals, eighth in assists, and ninth in points. He was a member of Canada's gold medal-winning team at the World Championship and received the Bruins' Seventh Player Award for his contributions to the team.

After retiring from professional hockey, Sweeney worked as a broadcaster before returning to the Bruins as a team executive. He advanced through roles including director of player development, director of hockey operations, and assistant general manager before becoming general manager. Sweeney's name is engraved on the Stanley Cup from the Bruins' championship as assistant general manager. He also established the team's annual development camp, which has become integral to the organization's prospect development.

Sweeney is the general manager of the Bruins, the eighth person to hold the position and the first former Bruins draft pick to do so. Under his leadership, the franchise has achieved a strong record, including multiple President's Trophy wins and setting the league's all-time single-season mark for wins and points. Sweeney was recognized as the NHL's General Manager of the Year and has served in leadership roles for Team Canada, including as general manager for the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off and as assistant general manager for the Olympic men's ice hockey team. He also serves as an alternate governor on the NHL's Board of Governors.
