Didier Drogba

Born in Abidjan, Didier Drogba spent his childhood between the Ivory Coast and France. Nicknamed “Tito” by friends and family, he left home at age five to join his uncle, Michel Goba—a professional footballer—in Brest, Brittany. His parents, both bank workers, were reluctant to let him go, but Michel convinced them the move would give Didier a real chance to succeed. Over the next three years, Didier traveled with his uncle between clubs, keeping up with school while absorbing football lessons and collecting shirts brought back by Michel after matches. At eight, he returned to Abidjan.

Drogba established the Didier Drogba Foundation in 2007, focusing on Health, Women's Empowerment, Education, and Children as our core priorities.

Back in France, Drogba joined Levallois, where he trained under Srebencko Repcic, a former Yugoslavian international and the club’s technical director. Known for his discipline, Drogba avoided distractions like nightlife, and quickly distinguished himself on the pitch. As the star of the Under-17 team coached by Christian Pornin, he scored thirty goals over two seasons (1994–1996), earning promotion to the first team in the French 2nd division under Jacques Loncar.

Patience became a key lesson early in his career. Despite being talented, Drogba often warmed the bench, playing only ten minutes in the 2nd division—but even then, he scored against Fontainebleau. His potential drew attention from Guingamp, Le Mans, Lens, and Paris Saint-Germain. A serious foot injury against Caen briefly slowed him, but on Jacques Loncar’s recommendation, Le Mans coach Marc Westerloppe brought him on as an apprentice. At 19, Drogba began his professional journey.

By 21, he signed his first professional contract with Le Mans, scoring seven goals in 30 matches in his debut season. Challenges followed: a pre-season injury in 2001 allowed teammate Daniel Cousin to claim the central striker role, and Drogba struggled on the wings, failing to score in eleven matches. He rebounded the next season with five goals in 21 appearances. In January 2002, Guingamp signed him, giving Drogba his first taste of Ligue 1 competition at age 24.

Years later, his journey culminated on the world stage: Drogba was a starter for the Ivory Coast at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
