Dhruv Khullar

Dhruv Khullar, M.D., M.P.P., is a physician, researcher, and writer whose work focuses on the intersection of medicine, public policy, and health economics. Khullar serves as an associate professor of health policy and economics at Weill Cornell Medical College and practices internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine and completed residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Khullar also holds a Master of Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School, where he was a fellow at the Center for Public Leadership, contributing to his interdisciplinary approach to American health care.

As a contributing writer for The New Yorker, Khullar examines technological, political, and economic trends shaping health care, including the integration of artificial intelligence in clinical care, challenges within Medicare Advantage, and the impact of private equity on health systems. He has contributed to major publications such as The New York Times and The Atlantic, and his work has appeared in "The Best American Science and Nature Writing." Khullar has described American medicine as being in a gilded age, where innovations coexist with systemic issues such as misaligned incentives, rising costs, and dissatisfaction among patients and clinicians.

Khullar's academic research includes more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and leadership of major federal and foundation research grants, including an R01 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality focused on vertical integration and its effects on Medicare quality and spending. His research, published in JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine, addresses value-based care, health care consolidation, clinician burnout, and emerging medical technologies. Khullar is Director of the Physicians Foundation Center for the Study of Physician Practice and Leadership and Associate Director of the Cornell Health Policy Center, where he co-leads a national survey of health policy scholars.

Khullar has been recognized as an Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine Scholar by the National Academy of Medicine, honored by the National Minority Quality Forum as a 40 Under 40 Leader in Health, named a Top Healthcare Professional by LinkedIn, and received the FASPE Distinguished Fellow Award for Ethical Leadership.
