Destin Daniel Cretton

Destin Daniel Cretton is a filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer known for blending character-driven storytelling with large-scale cinematic projects. Cretton made his feature directorial debut with the film "I Am Not a Hipster," which was showcased at the Sundance Film Festival. While attending film school at San Diego State University, he created a 22-minute short film, "Short Term 12," inspired by his experiences working at a facility for teenagers. The short premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking. His feature-length screenplay for the film was awarded one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.

The feature version of "Short Term 12" won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival and featured performances by Brie Larson, LaKeith Stanfield, Rami Malek, Kaitlyn Dever, and John Gallagher Jr. Based on Cretton's experiences in a group home for at-risk teenagers, the film is recognized for its honest portrayal of youth in care and is credited with helping launch the careers of several actors. Following "Short Term 12," Cretton directed "The Glass Castle," an adaptation of Jeannette Walls' memoir, and "Just Mercy," a legal drama centered on civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson. "Just Mercy" received NAACP Image Award recognition for Outstanding Motion Picture.

Cretton, who grew up in Maui as the child of a Japanese-American mother and a white father, often focuses on stories that highlight underrepresented communities. This perspective informed his direction of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," the first modern superhero film with a predominantly Asian cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cretton became the second Asian-American filmmaker to direct a Marvel film, following Ang Lee's work on Hulk. "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" became the highest-grossing domestic film of its release year, earning $224.5 million domestically and $431.9 million globally.

Cretton produces through his company Family Owned, which he co-founded with Asher Goldstein to develop film and television projects that spotlight communities often overlooked by mainstream media. He directed and executive produced an adaptation of the Gene Luen Yang graphic novel "American Born Chinese" for Disney Plus, featuring Michelle Yeoh and Daniel Wu. Cretton's work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe also includes "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the television series "Wonder Man," and writing and directing a sequel to "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." His career spans independent dramas and global blockbusters, establishing Cretton as a filmmaker with a focus on diversity, representation, and social issues in film and television.
