Desmond Howard

Desmond Howard is recognized for his achievements in American football, having won both the Heisman Trophy and the Super Bowl MVP Award. At the University of Michigan, Howard caught 62 passes for 985 yards and scored 23 total touchdowns in his Heisman-winning season, while also rushing for 180 yards and gaining 694 yards on special teams. He earned the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Award, and was a unanimous All-American. Howard captured 85 percent of the first-place votes in the Heisman balloting, the largest margin in history at that time. He was the first receiver in Big Ten history to lead the conference in scoring, setting or tying five NCAA records and 12 single-season Michigan records.

Drafted fourth overall in the NFL Draft by Washington, Howard spent 11 seasons in the league. Initially a wide receiver, he became known as a return specialist, holding the NFL record for 870 punt return yards in a single season. His 99-yard kickoff return in the Super Bowl made him the first and only player on special teams to be named Super Bowl MVP. Howard led Green Bay over New England after setting Super Bowl records for punt return yards and total return yards in a game. He is one of four players to win both the Heisman Trophy and the Super Bowl MVP, joining Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett, and Marcus Allen. Howard was also selected to the Pro Bowl with Detroit.

Howard's career has been recognized through inductions into the College Football Hall of Fame, National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, University of Michigan Hall of Honor, State of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, Gator Bowl Hall of Fame, and Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. His No. 21 was retired by the University of Michigan.

Howard joined ESPN as a college football analyst, contributing to the network after his NFL career. He has been a regular on the Sports Emmy Award-winning pregame show "College GameDay Built by The Home Depot." Howard also appears on ESPN's College Football Playoff studio programming, ABC's NFL Draft coverage, and the annual Heisman Trophy Presentation. As an analyst, Howard provides insight on college football, drawing on his experience as both a Heisman winner and Super Bowl MVP. He appears weekly alongside host Rece Davis and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban.
