
Dennis Murphy is an American television journalist whose career at NBC News spans several decades. A recipient of multiple national Emmy Awards for news reporting, Murphy is recognized for his contributions to NBC News, NBC Nightly News, "Dateline NBC," "The Today Show," and NBC News at Sunrise. He began his career as a desk assistant at WCBS-TV in New York and later worked as an assignment editor, producer, and reporter at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas. Before joining NBC News, Murphy was a reporter for KING-TV, the NBC affiliate in Seattle, Washington.
Murphy started as an NBC News correspondent at the Burbank, California bureau. He covered the Democratic presidential primaries and served as NBC's traveling correspondent on the Bush campaign. Prior to joining "Dateline NBC," Murphy was based in the NBC News London bureau, where he served as Chief Foreign Correspondent for "The Today Show" and contributed regularly to NBC Nightly News. His assignments have taken him to more than 50 countries, covering major international news events such as wars in the Persian Gulf and Central America, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall, and the war on terror in Afghanistan. He was present at the Berlin Wall the night it fell.
Murphy has been a "Dateline NBC" correspondent, frequently covering true-crime stories for the program's Friday night editions. He has reported on high-profile cases including the Casey Anthony trial, the Italian murder trial of Amanda Knox, and the Versace shooting in Miami Beach. His coverage also includes stories ranging from a Royal Wedding profile of Kate Middleton to the death of Osama bin Laden and the experiences of children of migrant workers.
Murphy's journalism has earned him honors including an Emmy Award, Clarion Award, Harry Chapin Media Award, and a National Headliner Award for "Children of the Harvest," a report on children in the United States working as migrant laborers. He has received two Emmys for his work on "Dateline NBC" and an American Bar Association certificate of merit for a program on the anatomy of a civil trial. Murphy was also awarded an Emmy for team coverage of the US Airways flight ditching in the Hudson River and a duPont Columbia Award for reporting on Hurricane Katrina.
