Dean Kamen

Dean Kamen is an engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur known for advancing technology in healthcare, robotics, and regenerative medicine. Kamen holds more than 1,000 U.S. and international patents, many for medical devices that have influenced global health care. As a college undergraduate, he invented the first wearable infusion pump, which was adopted in oncology, neonatology, and endocrinology. He founded AutoSyringe, Inc. to manufacture and market these pumps and, in collaboration with diabetes researchers, developed the first portable insulin pump. After selling AutoSyringe, Kamen established DEKA Research & Development in Manchester, New Hampshire.

At DEKA, Kamen led the development of technologies such as the HomeChoice portable dialysis machine, the iBOT Mobility System, the Segway Human Transporter, a DARPA-funded robotic arm, an improved Stirling engine, and the Slingshot water purifier. The iBOT wheelchair offers users the ability to elevate the seat to eye level and navigate stairs. The DEKA Arm System, also known as the Luke Arm, received FDA approval and provides users with advanced dexterity. The Slingshot water purification device uses vapor compression distillation and can operate with various fuel sources, including cow dung.

Kamen is also recognized for inventing the Segway PT, a self-balancing personal transporter that became a symbol of innovative personal mobility. He founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to engage youth in science and technology. FIRST operates in more than 100 countries, with millions of students participating in robotics programs and competitions. High school participants are eligible for scholarships from colleges, universities, and corporations.

Kamen later founded the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute, which launched the BioFabUSA innovation program to advance large-scale production of engineered human tissues and organs. His achievements have been recognized with honors including the National Medal of Technology, election to the National Academy of Engineering, the Lemelson–MIT Prize, and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. He has also been honored by NH Business Review and the New England Board of Higher Education for his leadership in science and technology education. Kamen is known for his public advocacy and ability to communicate complex technological concepts to broad audiences.
