David Mitchell

David Mitchell is the author of "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet," "Black Swan Green," "Cloud Atlas," "Number9Dream," "Ghostwritten," "The Bone Clocks," "Slade House," and "Utopia Avenue." Mitchell was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine. With KA Yoshida, Mitchell co-translated from the Japanese the international bestselling memoir, "The Reason I Jump." He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Mitchell was educated at the University of Kent, where he earned a degree in English and American Literature followed by a master's in comparative literature. He lived in Sicily for a year, then moved to Hiroshima, Japan, where he taught English to technical students for eight years before returning to England and later settling in Ireland.

Mitchell's first novel, "Ghostwritten," won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for best work of British literature written by an author under 35 and was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. His novels "Number9Dream" and "Cloud Atlas" were both shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. "Cloud Atlas" also received nominations for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Nebula Award, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Mitchell has written articles for several newspapers, notably The Guardian. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film "The Matrix Resurrections."
