David Merrill

David Merrill is a technology executive, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Elroy Air, a California-based company focused on autonomous heavy-cargo transport. With a background in computer science and robotic interactive systems, Merrill combines academic training with hands-on product development experience in aviation and logistics. He holds a doctorate from MIT and bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford University in computer science and symbolic systems.

Before his work in aviation, Merrill contributed to the field of human-computer interaction. Alongside his co-founder, Merrill developed "Sifteo Cube," a set of computerized tiles designed for tactile learning, after moving from MIT Media Lab to San Francisco. He presented the "Siftables" invention at the TED Conference, where the video of his talk gained widespread attention. "Sifteo Cubes" received recognition from TED, Fast Company, Popular Science, and Wired for their design. Merrill's company Sifteo was acquired by 3D Robotics, where he contributed to the launch of "Solo: the Smart Drone" and later led research and development and intellectual property initiatives.

At Elroy Air, Merrill has led a team advancing express logistics through autonomous aircraft. The company's flagship vehicle, "Chaparral," is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone engineered to transport more than 500 pounds of cargo. The aircraft features a hybrid-electric powertrain, offering electric propulsion reliability and an extended range of up to 450 miles without the need for charging infrastructure. Elroy Air has developed these systems in collaboration with NASA and the U.S. Air Force.

Elroy Air's VTOL aircraft utilize hybrid-electric and autonomous vehicle technologies to overcome traditional airport constraints, enabling new applications in commercial air cargo, humanitarian aid, and military logistics. The company has established a demand pipeline for more than 1,400 aircraft and a potential revenue opportunity exceeding $5 billion from logistics and aviation partners. Elroy Air has also announced a business combination agreement to become a publicly traded company.
