David Heinemeier Hansson

David Heinemeier Hansson is a Danish programmer, entrepreneur, author, and professional racing driver recognized for his contributions to web development and open-source software. While working on an early web project, Heinemeier Hansson used the Ruby programming language to develop a custom web framework, which he released as the open-source project Ruby on Rails. This framework has powered web applications for companies such as Twitter, Shopify, GitHub, Airbnb, and Square, and has been adopted by more than a million web applications globally. Companies that began with the framework have reached a combined valuation exceeding half a trillion dollars. Heinemeier Hansson received the Best Hacker of the Year Award at OSCON from Google and O'Reilly for creating Rails and accepted the Jolt Award for product excellence for Rails 1.0.

Heinemeier Hansson is a partner and chief technology officer at 37signals, a web-based software development firm. Since joining the company, he has contributed to the development of Basecamp, Campfire, Backpack, and other web-based applications. 37signals also launched HEY, an email platform designed to challenge conventional inbox management. Heinemeier Hansson founded The Rails Foundation to support documentation, education, marketing, and events within the Ruby on Rails ecosystem and serves as its chairman.
