David Eckstein

David Eckstein is a former Major League Baseball shortstop known for his perseverance and contributions to professional baseball. An infielder for 10 seasons in MLB, Eckstein played college baseball for the University of Florida before competing professionally for the Anaheim Angels, St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches during his playing career, Eckstein was the shortest active player in the league during his tenure.

At the University of Florida, Eckstein was a walk-on player who later earned an athletic scholarship. He became a first-team All-SEC selection, a first-team All-American, a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection, and the first two-time Academic All-American in Gators baseball history. He was later inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a Gator Great.

Eckstein made his MLB debut with the Anaheim Angels and quickly established himself as a catalyst at the top of the lineup. During the Angels' championship season, he led the major leagues with three grand slams, including grand slams in back-to-back games against the Toronto Blue Jays, one of which was a game-winning grand slam that helped the Angels win 20 of their next 23 games. Eckstein was a member of the World Series champion Anaheim Angels and the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was selected World Series MVP. In total, Eckstein won two World Series championships. His ability to deliver in crucial moments earned him the nicknames X Factor and Just Enough.

Eckstein's defining moment came during the World Series with the Cardinals, where he delivered a notable performance. He earned World Series MVP honors with a .364 batting average, including a team-leading eight hits and four RBI. After starting the Series 0-for-11, he recorded eight hits in the final three games after the Series shifted to St. Louis. He went 4-for-5 with three doubles in Game 4 and drove in the game-winning run, becoming just the third player in the past 50 years to record three doubles in a single World Series game. The World Series victory with the Cardinals made Eckstein one of few starting shortstops to have won a World Series in both the American and National Leagues.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Eckstein has shared his life story through public speaking and writing. In his book "Have Heart," Eckstein discusses overcoming his stature to become a World Series MVP. The book also details the family dynamics that helped the Ecksteins overcome kidney failure in three of the five children and their father. He was the inaugural winner of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association's Heart & Hustle Award. Eckstein is a keynote speaker who addresses topics such as baseball, overcoming adversity, and faith and religion, bringing the same determination and authenticity to the stage that characterized his playing career.
