David Cutcliffe

David Cutcliffe is recognized as a leading offensive strategist in college football, with a career spanning more than four decades. Cutcliffe began as a high school assistant coach and advanced to become a prominent figure in the sport, known for his expertise in quarterback development and program building. He received the Frank Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant coach in the country.

Cutcliffe's coaching trajectory included a significant tenure at the University of Tennessee, where he spent over 15 years on staff. During his time with the Volunteers, Tennessee secured five SEC championships, participated in 16 bowl games over 17 seasons, and won a national title. Cutcliffe played a key role in mentoring Peyton Manning, who set 42 records and passed for 11,201 yards, becoming only the fourth player in NCAA history at the time to surpass 11,000 passing yards. Manning later became the top pick in the NFL Draft, earned multiple league MVP honors, and was named MVP of Super Bowl XLI. Cutcliffe later became head coach at the University of Mississippi, where he continued his quarterback development legacy. At Ole Miss, he compiled a 44-29 record over six seasons, led the team to five winning seasons, five bowl appearances, and a share of the SEC Western Division championship. He was named SEC Coach of the Year after leading the Rebels to a 10-3 record and a Cotton Bowl victory over Oklahoma State. Cutcliffe also recruited and developed Eli Manning, who won the Maxwell Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

After overcoming a serious health issue that required triple-bypass surgery, Cutcliffe returned to coaching as the head football coach at Duke University. He inherited a program with only three winning seasons in the previous 25 years and a predecessor with a 4-42 record. Under Cutcliffe's leadership, Duke ended an 18-year bowl drought, reclaimed the Victory Bell by defeating North Carolina, and won the ACC Coastal Division championship, achieving the school's first 10-win season. Cutcliffe was named National Coach of the Year by five organizations: the American Football Coaches Association, Bobby Dodd Foundation, Maxwell Football Club, Sporting News, and Walter Camp Foundation. His tenure at Duke included the program's first bowl victory since 1961, two NFL first-round draft picks in Laken Tomlinson and Daniel Jones, an eight-game winning streak, and the school's first appearance in a final national poll in over 50 years. Cutcliffe was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and received the Nick Saban Legacy Award from the Monday Morning Quarterback Club.

After his time at Duke, Cutcliffe joined the SEC office as a special assistant to Commissioner Greg Sankey, where he contributed to game management and national policy development. He retired from that role, concluding a career marked by leadership in college football coaching, quarterback development, and program revitalization. Throughout his career, Cutcliffe has been recognized for his impact on player development, team leadership, and the advancement of college football.
