Sir David Adjaye is a Ghanaian-British architect known for his diverse designs and innovative use of materials and light.
After graduating from London South Bank University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture, Adjaye received the RIBA Bronze Medal for the best undergraduate design project in the United Kingdom. He later completed a master's program at the Royal College of Art. Before establishing his own practice, Adjaye worked in studios in London and Portugal, where he studied with Eduardo Souto de Moura. He also traveled to Japan to explore the works of Toyo Ito, Tadao Ando, Kenzo Tange, and Yoshio Taniguchi, and attended Japanese Buddhism courses at the University of Kyoto.
Adjaye founded Adjaye Associates, initially focusing on private commissions for artist studios and residences. The firm's scope expanded to civic projects, beginning with the Ideas Stores, two public libraries in London that redefined the role of libraries in fostering social interaction. These projects led to larger civic and cultural commissions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. Adjaye's early exposure to diverse cultures and architectural styles has influenced his approach to design, often integrating cultural identity, historical context, and social engagement.
One of Adjaye's most recognized achievements is the design of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., which features a crown motif inspired by Yoruba sculpture. The New York Times named the museum the cultural event of the year. Adjaye also traveled to the capital of every African country, photographing each city for the seven-volume set, "Adjaye Africa Architecture: A Photographic Survey of Metropolitan Architecture." Additional notable projects include the new home for the Studio Museum in Harlem and Ruby City, a contemporary art center in San Antonio, Texas.
Adjaye has held teaching positions at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, and has mentored emerging architects such as Mariam Kamara and Kunlé Adeyemi. He served as the first Louis Kahn visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania and as the Kenzo Tange Professor in Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Adjaye is a RIBA Chartered Member, an AIA Honorary Fellow, a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council. He co-authored two seasons of the BBC's "Dreamspaces" television series and presented the documentary "Building Africa: Architecture of a Continent."
Adjaye was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and recognized by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people. He received the Royal Gold Medal, becoming the first African and one of the youngest recipients, and was appointed to the Order of Merit. Adjaye is also a recipient of the World Economic Forum's Annual Crystal Award for leadership in serving communities, cities, and the environment. In a structural evolution of his firm, three new CEOs were appointed to lead Adjaye Associates' global studios in London, New York, and Accra, with Adjaye serving as executive chair and principal architect. Throughout his career, Adjaye has demonstrated that architecture is a social force capable of honoring history, elevating communities, and reshaping the understanding of space and form.
