David A. Bader

David A. Bader is a Distinguished Professor and founder of the Department of Data Science in the Ying Wu College of Computing, as well as Director of the Institute for Data Science at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Previously, Bader served as Chair of the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Computational Science & Engineering, where he was also a founding professor, and as executive director of High-Performance Computing at the Georgia Tech College of Computing. He completed his doctoral research under Joseph JaJa at the University of Maryland, focusing on parallel computing to address complex problems in Earth sciences, biology and genomics, and national security.

Bader's technical work has significantly influenced the computing industry. He built the first Linux supercomputer, which contributed to the high-performance computing revolution. Hyperion Research estimates that the economic value of Linux supercomputing pioneered by Bader has exceeded $100 trillion. The Computer History Museum recognizes Bader for developing the first Linux-based supercomputer, which became the predominant architecture for major supercomputers worldwide. Bader is also a cofounder of the Graph500 List for benchmarking big data computing platforms.

Bader is recognized for expertise in high-performance computing, data science, and massive-scale analytics, with research interests at the intersection of computing and real-world applications such as cybersecurity, computational genomics, and large-scale data analytics. He has co-authored more than 400 scholarly papers and has received best paper awards from ISC, IEEE HPEC, and IEEE/ACM SC. Bader has served as a lead scientist in several DARPA programs, including High Productivity Computing Systems with IBM, Ubiquitous High Performance Computing with NVIDIA, Anomaly Detection at Multiple Scales, Power Efficiency Revolution For Embedded Computing Technologies, Hierarchical Identify Verify Exploit, and Software-Defined Hardware. He is editor of several volumes in the field, including "Massive Graph Analytics," "Graph Partitioning and Graph Clustering," "Scientific Computing with Multicore and Accelerators," and "Petascale Computing." Bader serves as Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Parallel Computing and previously served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems.

Bader has received honors such as the IEEE Sidney Fernbach Award for the development of Linux-based massively parallel production computers and for contributions to scalable discrete parallel algorithms for real-world applications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, AAAS, and SIAM; an inductee of the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering Innovation Hall of Fame; an inductee of the Mimms Museum of Technology and Art's Hall of Fame; and a recipient of the Heatherington Award for Technological Innovation. Bader has also received awards from IBM, Microsoft Research, Nvidia, Facebook, Intel, Accenture, and Sony. Beyond academia, Bader advises the White House on initiatives such as the National Strategic Computing Initiative and Future Advanced Computing Ecosystem. He is an appointed member of the NIH National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute Advisory Council and an elected board member of the Computing Research Association. Bader's work continues to shape the fields of high-performance computing, data science, and computational analytics.
