Davey Alba

Alba is a technology reporter for Bloomberg based in New York City, where she covers Big Tech and its power in all its forms.

Most recently, Alba was a reporter for The New York Times, covering online disinformation and its global harms. Prior to that, Alba served as a senior reporter at BuzzFeed News, writing about artificial intelligence and the technology industry’s invasive effects on people and communities. Earlier in Alba’s career, she worked as a reporter for WIRED in Silicon Valley.

In 2019, Alba won a Livingston Award for excellence in international reporting for her piece, “How Duterte Used Facebook To Fuel the Philippine Drug War.” Alba also received a 2019 Mirror Award in the special topic category, Best Story on Journalism in Peril, for the same feature. In 2020, Alba and several of her Times colleagues earned an honorable mention at the SABEW Awards for stories exploring the growing dark side of the information ecosystem. In 2022, Alba and her Bloomberg colleagues won an Online Journalism Award and a Deadline Club Award for their reporting on the post-Roe information crisis, and they were finalists for both the Sigma Award and the SABEW Awards in the investigations category.

Alba has spoken publicly about her work at Oxford University during the Blavatnik School of Government’s “Challenges of Government” 2018 Conference and at the University of Florida, where she served as the Science Journalist in Residence for Spring 2019.

Alba studied science writing at Columbia University and grew up in Manila, Philippines. Today she lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her two cats, Laser Beam and Vivienne.
