Dave Winfield

Dave Winfield is recognized as one of the most complete athletes in American professional sports. Winfield was the first athlete to be drafted by four different leagues: Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the American Basketball Association, and the National Football League. He chose baseball, beginning his professional career with the San Diego Padres immediately after a standout collegiate tenure at the University of Minnesota. Winfield earned Most Valuable Player honors in the College World Series and was an inaugural inductee into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

During his 22-year Major League Baseball career, Winfield played for the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, California Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and Cleveland Indians. Known for his five-tool skill set, Winfield had four seasons with at least 20 stolen bases and was selected to 12 All-Star Games. After leaving San Diego, he joined the Yankees as a free agent, signing a 10-year contract valued at $23 million, which at the time was the richest in professional sports. A highlight of his career came when, at age 40, Winfield drove in 108 runs as Toronto's designated hitter, including a decisive double in Game 6 of the World Series that secured the Blue Jays' first championship. He achieved his 3,000th career hit with Minnesota and concluded his playing days with Cleveland.

Winfield is one of only five players in Major League Baseball history to collect more than 3,000 hits and hit over 450 home runs. He was a 12-time All-Star, won seven Gold Glove Awards and six Silver Slugger Awards, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on his first ballot appearance. The Baseball Writers' Association of America elected him with 84.5 percent of the vote, and he became the first player inducted wearing a San Diego Padres cap. ESPN ranked him among the top all-around athletes in sports history.

Beyond his achievements on the field, Winfield founded the David M. Winfield Foundation, one of the first charitable organizations established by a professional athlete. The foundation has provided health care, holiday meals, and educational scholarships to underprivileged families. Winfield received the Roberto Clemente Award for his community service and played a significant role in the development of the Major League Baseball Players Association. The City of Saint Paul honored him with a statue at Toni Stone Field, and the annual Winfield Awards continue to recognize student-athletes of color excelling in academics, athletics, and community service.

After his playing career, Winfield served as an executive in professional baseball and worked in media with FOX Sports and ESPN. His academic background in communications from the University of Minnesota supported his roles as an on-air analyst for ESPN and FOX Sports, a radio program host, and a columnist. Winfield is the author of several books, including the autobiography "Winfield: A Player's Life," which was a New York Times bestseller, "TURN IT AROUND! There's No Room Here For Drugs," the instructional guide "The Complete Baseball Player," and "Dropping The Ball," which examines challenges and solutions in baseball. As a motivational speaker, Winfield addresses topics such as sports, business, education, health, fitness, teamwork, and leadership.
