Darlene Love is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Award winner, and actress whose career in American popular music spans more than six decades. An American R&B and soul singer and actress, Love served as the lead singer of the girl group the Blossoms while also building a solo recording career. She began her professional journey in the early 1960s, singing backup for artists including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, the Righteous Brothers, and Dionne Warwick—either solo or as the lead member of the Blossoms. As part of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, she and the Blossoms appeared weekly on the television show "Shindig."
Love's powerful voice was featured on some of the era's biggest hits, often without her name on the label. Her biggest hit, the number one single "He's a Rebel," was released under the name of the Crystals, though it was recorded by the Blossoms in Los Angeles. The song sold more than 3 million copies, but Love did not receive royalties. Despite these setbacks, she recorded enduring classics under her own name, including "(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry," "Wait 'Til My Bobby Gets Home," and the holiday anthem "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," which was recorded for the album "A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector." In the early 1980s, Love faced significant challenges, including working as a house cleaner to support her family, reflecting the difficulties many artists encounter in the music industry.
Love's career resurgence is notable within the music and entertainment industry. Beginning in the mid-1980s, she established an annual tradition with late night television host David Letterman, performing "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" every December, first on Late Night With David Letterman on NBC and later on The Late Show With David Letterman on CBS. Love is also featured in the documentary film "20 Feet from Stardom," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Oscar for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards, as well as the Grammy Award for Best Music Film. At the Academy Awards, Love delivered her acceptance speech in song on behalf of the performers in the film.
As an actress, Love has appeared in film and theater. Her most prominent film roles include the "Lethal Weapon" series, in which she played Trish, the wife of Detective Roger Murtaugh. She also appeared in several Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals, including "Leader of the Pack," "Hairspray," and a revival of "Grease." Love published her autobiography, "My Name Is Love," which details her experiences in the music industry and her perseverance through adversity.
Love has been honored with the ASCAP-Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to music. Her album "Introducing Darlene Love" was produced by Steven Van Zandt, with songs written for her by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Jimmy Webb. She is ranked number 84 among Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers, and the New York Times has noted that her voice is deeply embedded in the history of rock and roll. Love continues to perform her annual Christmas show in New York City, highlighted by "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," underscoring her enduring influence in the music industry.
