Darlene Love

Darlene Love is an American singer, performer, and actress whose powerful voice and enduring career have made her one of the most celebrated figures in popular music. Ranked No. 84 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, Love has enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades and remains active on the touring stage well into her eighties.

Discovered as a high school student singing in her church choir in Los Angeles, Love joined the girl group The Blossoms, whose session work with producer Phil Spector placed her at the heart of the 1960s pop and soul sound. She provided lead vocals on timeless hits such as “He’s a Rebel,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,” and “He’s Sure the Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” and her voice appeared on recordings by Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, and others. Her 1963 holiday classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” has become a perennial favorite — cementing her nickname as the “Queen of Christmas.”

In recent years Love has continued to perform widely, including her 2025 “Love for the Holidays” tour, which brought her signature holiday celebration to audiences across the United States, and upcoming performances in 2026 such as at Queens College’s Kupferberg Center for the Performing Arts. She has been honored on the Count Basie Center for the Arts Walk of Fame, marking her lasting impact on live performance and American music culture.

Love’s achievements extend to television, film, and stage — she appeared as Roger Murtaugh’s wife in the “Lethal Weapon” film series and has performed in Broadway productions including “Grease” and “Leader of the Pack.” She has also been featured in documentaries such as “20 Feet from Stardom,” which won an Academy Award and highlighted her and other background vocalists’ contributions to music history.
