Darla Moore

Darla Moore is an American investor and philanthropist known for her leadership in finance and her significant contributions to education and community development. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University, Moore joined the management training program at Chemical Bank in New York City, where she advanced to managing director. She specialized in debtor-in-possession financing for companies in bankruptcy, establishing a reputation in a high-stakes, male-dominated sector of the financial industry.

Moore gained national attention when Fortune featured her on its cover and included her in its list of the "50 Most Powerful Women in American Business." She has also been recognized by Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN. As president of Rainwater, Inc., one of the largest private investment firms in the United States, Moore expanded the firm's assets under management. Her board service includes roles with Hospital Corporation of America, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, the National Advisory Board of JP Morgan, New York University School of Medicine and Hospital, and Teach for America.

Moore's philanthropic work in education includes a landmark donation to the University of South Carolina, resulting in the naming of the Darla Moore School of Business. She co-funded the Eugene T. Moore School of Education at Clemson University, created the Darla Moore Scholarship at Francis Marion University, and endowed Claflin University's music department. Moore founded the Palmetto Institute, a nonprofit think tank focused on increasing per capita income in South Carolina, highlighting her commitment to linking education and economic opportunity.

In Lake City, South Carolina, Moore founded the ArtFields festival, an annual art competition and exhibition that attracts artists from across the Southeast. She established the Moore Farms Botanical Garden and led the development of the Continuum, a regional education and workforce development center. Moore has been inducted into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Hall of Fame and received the Business Person of the Year Award from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. She was among the first women admitted to Augusta National Golf Club. Moore made a significant gift to The Shed, a cultural institution in New York City, with the Level 2 Gallery named in her honor.
