Dann Florek

Dann Florek is an actor and film director whose career spans stage, film, and television. After leaving Eastern Michigan University, where he studied math and physics, Florek moved to New York to pursue acting. He trained at Juilliard and performed in stage productions during the late 1970s and early 1980s, appearing in plays ranging from classical to contemporary works. He later performed at La Jolla Playhouse and Globe Theatre while seeking roles in film and television.

Florek developed a reputation for portraying pragmatic officials in television crime dramas, with credits including "Hill Street Blues," "The Equalizer," "Matlock," and "21 Jump Street." He is widely recognized for his role as New York City Police Captain Donald Cragen on NBC's "Law & Order" and its spinoff "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," as well as for his portrayal of Dave Meyer on "L.A. Law." Florek made his film debut in the Alan Alda-directed comedy "Sweet Liberty," followed by a featured role in Alan Parker's thriller "Angel Heart," and additional credits in "Five Corners," "Sunset," and "Moon Over Parador."

Florek starred as Captain Donald Cragen on "Law & Order" and later reprised the role in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." He also directed several episodes of "Law & Order," demonstrating his skills behind the camera. At the time of his departure from "Special Victims Unit," Florek was the longest-serving main cast member in the "Law & Order" franchise, having appeared in more than 400 episodes across both series.

On the big screen, Florek played Mr. Slate in the feature adaptation of "The Flintstones." His performance on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" earned him a nomination for a Prism Award for outstanding performance in a drama episode. Eastern Michigan University awarded him an honorary degree in recognition of his career achievements. In addition to his television and film work, Florek has appeared in theater productions such as "The Front Page" on Broadway and "The Joy Wheel," as well as in the films "Hard Rain," "Beautiful Joe," and "Santorini Blue." Florek's extensive experience in television crime dramas, stage productions, and directing has established him as a consistent presence in American entertainment.
