Creed

Creed is a rock band that rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s as one of the defining acts of the post-grunge era. Formed in 1994 in Tallahassee, Florida, the group originally consisted of lead vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips. Their sound blended heavy alternative rock with melodic hooks and introspective, often spiritually themed lyrics, helping them stand out during a crowded era of mainstream rock.

Creed’s breakthrough came with their debut album My Own Prison in 1997, an independently released record that gained unexpected radio traction and eventually went multi-platinum after being picked up by a major label. Their follow-up 1999 album, Human Clay, cemented their success, driven by massive singles like “Higher” and “With Arms Wide Open,” the latter earning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. The album became one of the bestselling rock records of its time, pushing Creed into global headliner status.

In 2001, the band released Weathered, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included hits such as “My Sacrifice” and “One Last Breath.” Despite their commercial peak, internal tensions and growing public criticism of their emotional, faith-infused lyrics led to their initial breakup in 2004.

Creed reunited in 2009 and released Full Circle that same year, followed by touring activity that reaffirmed their strong fan base. After another extended hiatus, the band announced additional reunion shows in the 2020s, tapping into renewed nostalgia for early-2000s rock.
