Craig Fehrman is a journalist and historian whose work explores American history, politics, and literary culture. He has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Republic, and Slate, and has appeared on PBS NewsHour and NPR's "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered." Fehrman is known for uncovering overlooked stories and presenting them with narrative clarity, establishing a reputation in the field of popular history.
Fehrman's debut book, "Author in Chief: The Untold Story of Our Presidents and the Books They Wrote," examines U.S. presidents through their literary works, from Thomas Jefferson's "Notes on the State of Virginia" to Barack Obama's "Dreams from My Father." The book draws on newly uncovered documents, including previously unpublished letters from Andrew Jackson, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. "Author in Chief" received critical acclaim for its combination of journalistic narrative and historical scholarship, and was featured on PBS NewsHour's Bookshelf segment, where Fehrman discussed the tradition of presidential writing and the strategic role books have played in political careers.
Fehrman's second book, "This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis & Clark," published by Avid Reader Press/Simon & Schuster, offers a revisionist history of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The book is based on extensive research, including visits to more than 30 archives, interviews with over 100 sources, and the collection of oral histories. Rather than focusing solely on the expedition's leaders, Fehrman highlights a broader cast of figures, including York, Sacajawea, John Ordway, and several Native American leaders. The book features the discovery of William Clark's college notebook, which reframes Clark as a student of the Enlightenment, and uncovers Thomas Jefferson's secret political maneuvers to fund the expedition, providing insight into presidential power.
In addition to his books, Fehrman has edited "The Best Presidential Writing," an anthology reflecting his expertise in the literary aspects of American political history. He also teaches sportswriting at Indiana University, sharing his journalistic approach with aspiring writers.
