Clay Matthews

Clay Matthews III is recognized as one of the most decorated defensive players in Green Bay Packers history and a leading pass-rusher in the National Football League. Born into a football family as the son of Clay Matthews Jr. and nephew of Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, Matthews established his own legacy through consistent performance and versatility on the field. His journey to the NFL began as a walk-on at USC, where he earned three consecutive Special Teams Player of the Year awards and contributed as a reserve outside linebacker.

Selected 26th overall in the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, Matthews played for the franchise for nearly a decade, accumulating 519 tackles, 91.5 sacks, and 17 forced fumbles. He made an immediate impact, finishing third in Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, recording 10 sacks, and earning a Pro Bowl selection. Matthews later became the first Packers linebacker in more than two decades to be named first-team AP All-Pro and finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting. He also received honors such as SN NFL Defensive Player of the Year, NFC Defensive Player of the Year, and the Butkus Award.

Matthews is known for a pivotal forced fumble in Super Bowl XLV, a play that remains significant in Packers history. He holds the franchise record for sacks with 83.5, is a six-time Pro Bowl selection, and a two-time All-Pro. His adaptability was evident when the Packers moved him to inside linebacker, where he continued to excel, recording 11 tackles and a sack in his first game at the position and helping the team secure seven wins in their final eight regular-season games.

Matthews concluded his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams, adding eight sacks to his career total. He formally announced his retirement from professional football, and his contributions were recognized with induction into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.
