Christine Lagarde

Christine Lagarde is a prominent figure in global economic governance, recognized for her leadership roles in international finance, law, and government. Lagarde became the first woman to lead both the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank, as well as the first female finance minister of a G7 country. After being admitted to the Paris Bar, Lagarde joined Baker & McKenzie as an associate, specializing in labor, antitrust, and mergers and acquisitions. She served on the Executive Committee, became chairman of the Global Executive Committee, and later chaired the Global Strategic Committee at the firm.

Lagarde transitioned from law to public service, joining the French government as minister for foreign trade. She later served as minister for agriculture and fisheries, and then as finance and economy minister of France. During her tenure, Lagarde presided over the French presidency of the European Union, the ECOFIN presidency, and the French presidency of the G20. Her leadership during the global financial crisis contributed to her reputation as an economic policymaker.

Lagarde served as the 11th managing director of the International Monetary Fund, where she addressed major issues such as the Greek debt crisis and advocated for debt relief. She was selected for a second term before resigning to become president of the European Central Bank.

As president of the European Central Bank, Lagarde heads the Executive Board, Governing Council, and General Council, and represents the bank internationally, including at the G20. She has managed monetary policy and inflation challenges in the eurozone, responding to geopolitical shocks and evolving economic dynamics.

Lagarde is known for her advocacy of gender equality, financial inclusion, global tax reform, and the integration of climate change considerations into economic policy. Her honors include the Global Leadership Award from Columbia University School of International Public Affairs, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Medal of Honor for Women, the Woman of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award from Glamour Magazine, the Diplomat of the Year Award from Foreign Policy Magazine, and the Sutherland Leadership Award for her contributions to European and global financial policy and economic stability.
