Chris Richards

Chris Richards is a soccer player who plays as a center-back for Premier League club Crystal Palace and the United States national team. Richards began his youth career with FC Dallas before moving to Bundesliga club Bayern Munich, where he initially played for the reserve team. He made his senior debut for Bayern Munich at age 18, becoming the first American to start a match for the club. Richards later spent time on loan at 1899 Hoffenheim before signing with Crystal Palace.

With Crystal Palace, Richards contributed to the club's first major trophy by winning the FA Cup and helped secure the UEFA Conference League, marking the club's first European title. He also played a role in the club's Community Shield victory. As a center-back, Richards is responsible for organizing the defense and directing his teammates, demonstrating strong aerial ability, composure on the ball, and tactical awareness.

Internationally, Richards began with the U.S. Under-20 team, winning the CONCACAF U20 Championship. He partnered with Tim Ream in a Nations League Final victory over Mexico and started all six matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, earning Best XI honors as the United States reached the final. Although a hamstring injury prevented him from participating in the World Cup in Qatar, Richards has since established himself as a leader for both club and country.

Richards received the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award, becoming the second consecutive defender to earn the honor. He was informed of the award during an interview on "The Pat McAfee Show," which aired on ESPN. Richards has captained the national team and played a key role under coach Mauricio Pochettino. Despite suffering two torn ligaments in his ankle ahead of the FIFA World Cup, Richards returned to help the United States achieve a strong start in the tournament. He is recognized for his leadership and presence in the locker room, contributing to both Crystal Palace and the U.S. national team as a central figure in defense.
