Charu Kumarhia

Charu Kumarhia is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, writer, and speaker based in the Southeastern United States, recognized for her work in broadcast journalism, podcasting, and media literacy. A graduate of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, Kumarhia began her career at WLOS, the ABC affiliate serving Western North Carolina, where she reported on a range of topics in news, culture, and social issues. Her reporting at WLOS earned her an Emmy Award.

Kumarhia expanded her storytelling to digital platforms as the creator and host of "The Story with Charu," a podcast examining the intersection of truth, media, and human experience. Over nine seasons and more than 80 episodes, the podcast featured conversations on arts, culture, true crime, and social justice. In a notable three-part series, Kumarhia revisited her encounter with Vince Gilmer, a physician convicted of killing his father, collaborating with Dr. Benjamin Gilmer to investigate the role of Huntington's disease in the case. The series highlighted Kumarhia's approach to investigative journalism and narrative storytelling.

In addition to her media work, Kumarhia has contributed to the arts community in Charlotte, serving as the City of Charlotte's Arts and Culture representative and collaborating with organizations such as the Arts & Science Council. Her civic engagement underscores her commitment to cultural accessibility and public discourse. Kumarhia is frequently invited to speak on topics including media literacy, storytelling, and the role of journalism in society.
