Cennydd Bowles

Cennydd Bowles is a London-based technology ethicist, interaction designer, and author with a career spanning more than two decades at the intersection of digital product design and moral philosophy. Bowles has served as a design manager at Twitter and contributed to the development of the British experience design field. His client portfolio includes organizations such as Twitter, Ford, Cisco, and the BBC.

Midway through his career in the UK tech sector and Silicon Valley, Bowles developed a focus on the ethical challenges facing the technology industry, which led him to study practical ethics at the University of Oxford. He is the author of two books. His first, "Undercover User Experience Design," is widely used in the design community. His second, "Future Ethics," translates modern ethical theory into practical guidance for designers, product managers, and software engineers. The book examines key issues in technology ethics, including unintended consequences, algorithmic bias, persuasive technology, surveillance, autonomous warfare, and the implications of a post-work society. "Future Ethics" has been translated into Spanish.

Bowles is a Fulbright Scholar at Elon University in North Carolina, and his perspectives on technology ethics and design have been cited by Forbes, WIRED, and The Wall Street Journal. He has lectured at organizations and institutions such as Google, Facebook, Stanford University, and the Royal College of Art, focusing on anticipatory ethics and how technology teams can address the social and ethical impacts of innovation. His research draws on futures thinking, safety engineering, and practical moral philosophy, forming the basis of his book, "What Could Go Wrong?"

Bowles leads training workshops and speaks on the ethics of emerging technology at organizations including Microsoft, Stanford, Google, IBM, and Capital One. He serves as a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and advises companies such as Google, Mozilla, and the BBC on responsible innovation. His academic work includes editorial contributions to Communications of the Association for Information Systems and a published paper in the Journal of the British Academy on the psychological and ethical implications of voice conversion and cloning.
