Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo is a Spanish politician, journalist, and intellectual known for her outspoken defense of liberal democracy against populism, nationalism, and identity politics. Educated at Oxford University, where she earned a BA and PhD in history under Sir John H. Elliott, she has combined academic rigor with incisive political commentary and high-profile interviews.
A member of Spain’s Partido Popular, she served multiple terms in Parliament for Madrid and Barcelona, and from 2019 to 2020 was the party’s spokesperson in Congress. Her sharp parliamentary speeches and advocacy for Enlightenment values have earned her influence across Spain and Latin America. In 2014, she co-founded Libres e Iguales to defend the Spanish constitutional order, playing a key role in mobilizing opposition to Catalan separatism.
An “Amazon feminist” opposed to identity-based victimhood, Álvarez de Toledo continues to champion democratic renewal through a “New Political Space of Reason.” She has received numerous awards, including Oxford’s Gibbs Prize for History.
