Charlyn Marie Marshall, known professionally as Cat Power, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and model recognized for her contributions to independent music. Marshall adopted the name Cat Power for her first band and has continued to use it throughout her career, drawing influence from blues and rock 'n' roll. Under the Cat Power moniker, she has released 11 studio albums, with her sound evolving from punk to folk, blues, soul, and beyond over more than three decades.
Marshall's professional breakthrough occurred after she was discovered opening for Liz Phair by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar. She recorded her first two albums, "Dear Sir" and "Myra Lee," on the same day. After signing with Matador Records, Marshall released "What Would the Community Think," followed by "Moon Pix," recorded with members of Dirty Three, and "The Covers Record," a collection of cover songs. "Moon Pix" received critical acclaim and, along with the music video for "Cross Bones Style," brought her wider recognition. "The Covers Record" featured a rendition of "Sea of Love," which appeared in the film "Juno."
Marshall continued to develop her artistry with each release. After a brief hiatus, she returned with "You Are Free," featuring guest musicians Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, followed by the soul-influenced "The Greatest," recorded with Memphis studio musicians, and a second covers album, "Jukebox." With "The Greatest," Marshall became the first female artist to win the Shortlist Music Prize and received a nomination for Best International Female at the Brit Awards. Her ninth studio album, "Sun," which she self-produced, debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200, marking her highest charting album. "Sun" also appeared on NPR's "Best Music of 2012" lists.
Beyond music, Marshall has established a presence in the fashion industry. She was noted for her "neo grunge" style and served as a muse for designers such as Marc Jacobs and Nicolas Ghesquière. Marshall modeled for New York magazine and Purple magazine and became a spokesperson for a Chanel jewelry line after being noticed by Karl Lagerfeld, who also selected Cat Power for the soundtrack of a Chanel fashion show. Her work extends to film, with appearances in movies including "My Blueberry Nights," "V for Vendetta," and "Wish I Was Here."
Marshall has continued to explore new creative directions. She made her Domino Records debut with "Wanderer," a collection of folk and blues-inspired songs featuring a collaboration with Lana Del Rey and a cover of Rihanna's "Stay." Several of her songs appeared on the soundtrack to the film "Flag Day," and she released "Covers," her third album of interpretations, featuring songs by artists such as Del Rey, Frank Ocean, the Pogues, and Kitty Wells. Marshall's respect for musical tradition is evident in albums like "Jukebox" and "Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert." Her ongoing reinvention has influenced a new generation of singer-songwriters, including Mitski, Snail Mail, and Angel Olsen.
