Carrie Mae Weems is recognized as a leading contemporary artist whose work explores family relationships, cultural identity, sexism, class, political systems, and the consequences of power. Weems works across various media, including text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation video, and photography, with a primary focus on photography. She began her artistic journey studying modern dance before turning to photography, inspired by a copy of "The Black Photographers Annual," which introduced her to artists such as Roy DeCarava and Ming Smith. After moving to New York, Weems studied photography with Dawoud Bey at the Studio Museum and became involved with the Kamoinge Workshop, a collective of Black photographers.
Weems earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California Institute of the Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego, and pursued graduate studies in folklore at the University of California, Berkeley. Her influential series, "The Kitchen Table Series," presents staged photographs depicting everyday moments in a woman's life, using the kitchen as a central setting. Weems's work has evolved to address political themes, particularly racism and the African American experience, as seen in series such as "From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried." Other notable works include "Ain't Joking," "The Louisiana Project," and "Roaming," which examine race, class, and gender discrimination through a blend of black-and-white photography, African American folklore, multimedia collage, and experimental printing techniques.
Weems became the first Black woman to have a retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City with "Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video." Her accolades include the Hasselblad Award, National Medal of Arts, Prix de Roma, Frida Kahlo Award for Innovative Creativity, WEB DuBois Medal, Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, BET Honors Visual Artist Award, Lucie Award for Fine Art Photography, and honorary fellowship in the Royal Photographic Society.
Weems's work is held in public and private collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and Tate Modern. The Barbican Centre in London presented her first major UK exhibition, "Reflections for Now," showcasing photography and video installations spanning more than three decades. Weems serves as Artist in Residence at Syracuse University. Her commission, "The Cool Blue Wind," a photographic collage accompanied by original music, is installed in the Museum's Sky Room Vista at the Obama Presidential Center and explores themes of jazz, collective memory, and democratic participation. Weems has described jazz as a metaphor for democracy, reflecting her ongoing commitment to illuminating the complexities of the American experience through visual art.
