Carole Simpson came to ABC News from NBC News. Before joining NBC news she was a journalism instructor and director of the information bureau at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
Simpson reports most frequently on family and social issues for "World News Tonight." Her reports have also appeared on "20/20," "Nightline," and other ABC news broadcasts and specials.
Simpson was moderator of the second Presidential debate in Richmond, Virginia—the first Presidential debate in history to have a town meeting format and. she was one of the reporters on the critically acclaimed documentary, "Black and White America."
Simpson was a member of the "Nightline" team that went to South Africa and helped anchor ABC's live coverage of the release of Nelson Mandela from his 27-year imprisonment. Simpson's first assignment for ABC News included coverage of then-Vice President George Bush. She accompanied him on foreign and domestic trips, and also on his 1988 Presidential campaign.
Simpson's other broadcasting experience includes serving as a commentator as well as reporter and anchor. She has received numerous awards for her reporting on social issues, especially those involving children and families, and for her efforts to improve opportunities for women and minorities in the broadcasting industry.
Simpson serves on numerous boards, commissions and foundations. She has established several college scholarships for women and minorities pursing careers in broadcast journalism, at the University of Michigan, and the Carole Simpson scholarship administered by the RTNDF.
