Carol Liu

Carol Liu is an independent filmmaker, immersive experience creator, and entrepreneur whose work spans cinema, virtual reality, and emerging technology. Liu is an Emerging Media National Member at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University and a Master of Fine Arts in Film from NYU Tisch. She began her virtual reality career as an inaugural fellow of Oculus Launchpad and Google's Jump Start program, establishing an early presence in immersive media.

Liu focuses on stories about women and marginalized figures. Her original films include the feature documentary "Restoring the Light" and the screenplay "Leftover Woman," a Writer's Guild of America Festival pitch finalist. Liu received the SF Film Society Rainin Screenwriting Grant for her feature, "Goddess of Nanking."

Liu's virtual reality work has appeared on the international festival circuit. Her VR film "Tale of the Tibetan Nomad," created with playwright Stan Lai and production designer Sandra Woodall, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and Theater Above in Shanghai, and is distributed by Oculus TV. Her VR experience "Marie Antoinette VR" explores the history of the French queen and was presented at Cannes Film Festival, Oculus Connect, and was an official selection of Busan International Film Festival. The project is in development as a cinematic immersive experience titled "The Redemption of Marie Antoinette." Liu is also known for "Ganga (VR)."

Liu is building the Art Standard, an immersive experiences ecosystem focused on art and human heritage, utilizing web3, XR, and AI technologies. As founder of U-Ma Studios, she advances storytelling through technology. Liu has been interviewed and profiled by Los Angeles Times, SF Chronicle, Timeout, and China Central Television, and has spoken at the US Embassy China, HarvardxDesign conference, and Oculus Connect. Her expertise in film, immersive media, and emerging technology positions her as a knowledgeable voice in the future of storytelling.
