Carlos Delgado

Carlos Delgado is a Puerto Rican former Major League Baseball star, humanitarian, and social activist whose influence has extended well beyond the baseball diamond. Born June 25, 1972, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Delgado grew up idolizing fellow Puerto Rican baseball legend and humanitarian Roberto Clemente. Clemente’s example would profoundly shape Delgado’s own commitment to social justice, peace, and service.

Delgado spent 17 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily as a first baseman and designated hitter, playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, Florida Marlins, and New York Mets. One of the most accomplished power hitters of his generation, he finished his career with 473 home runs, 1,512 RBIs, and more than 2,000 hits. With Toronto, he became one of the greatest offensive players in franchise history, earning two All-Star selections and three Silver Slugger Awards. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Puerto Rican Sports Hall of Fame, and was added to the Blue Jays' Level of Excellence in 2013.

Delgado's legacy is equally notable for his willingness to use his public platform to advocate for causes he believed in. In the early 2000s, he became an outspoken opponent of the U.S. Navy's use of the Puerto Rican island of Vieques for military bombing exercises, joining a broader movement that ultimately helped bring the Navy's bombing activities there to an end in 2003. He also publicly opposed the Iraq War. During the 2004 baseball season, Delgado quietly protested by remaining in the dugout during the seventh-inning playing of “God Bless America,” explaining that he could not support a war he believed was wrong.

His activism has been accompanied by extensive philanthropic work. In 2001, Delgado founded Extra Bases, a nonprofit organization initially established to assist needy families and young people in Puerto Rico. The organization has supported children and underserved communities through educational opportunities, scholarships, athletic programs, and other forms of assistance. Delgado has also regularly visited hospitalized children, participated in Three Kings Day charitable initiatives, and supported organizations serving people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations.

Delgado has also made education and community development a priority. He has participated in programs designed to address Puerto Rico's public-education challenges and once taught a class on athletic mental training and health to students in a public-housing community. In 2007, he donated video-conferencing equipment to a hospital in his hometown of Aguadilla, helping establish a telemedicine connection with a Boston hospital and expanding local access to medical expertise.

His humanitarian contributions earned Delgado the 2006 Roberto Clemente Award, one of baseball's most prestigious honors for sportsmanship and community service. The recognition was particularly meaningful given Clemente's influence on Delgado's life and worldview.

Since retiring from professional baseball, Delgado has continued his work on behalf of Puerto Rico and its communities. Following Hurricane Maria in 2017, he participated directly in relief efforts, working with other Puerto Rican baseball figures to assist people affected by the disaster. He has consistently argued that athletes have a responsibility to use their visibility to speak up when they see injustice.
