Carla Overbeck

Carla Overbeck is recognized as a significant figure in soccer. As captain of the United States Women's National Team, Overbeck led the team to two FIFA Women's World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal. Her collegiate career at the University of North Carolina included three All-America selections and participation on four consecutive NCAA national championship teams. The Tar Heels maintained a 95-match unbeaten streak during her tenure, highlighting her defensive skills and leadership.

Overbeck played a key role in the United States' victory at the FIFA Women's World Cup in China and captained the squad that advanced to the semifinals in a subsequent World Cup. She also served as captain of the U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold medal and led Team USA to another World Cup championship and a silver medal in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. From August 1993 to January 1996, Overbeck played a record 63 consecutive games for the national team, including a streak of 3,547 consecutive minutes. She was the only player to start all 23 games played by the United States across three Women's World Cups and the Olympic Games during her career.

Overbeck's national team career spanned 13 years, beginning in 1988, during which she played 168 full internationals. Her overtime goal in the semifinal match helped the Carolina Courage win the WUSA Founders Cup II, defeating the Washington Freedom 3-2. The 1999 U.S. Women's World Cup team, of which Overbeck was a member, was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year.

In her coaching career, Overbeck contributed to the Duke University women's soccer program, helping the Blue Devils advance to the NCAA title game. Over more than three decades, Duke advanced to the NCAA Tournament 30 times, including NCAA College Cup appearances. Overbeck was named associate head coach as the program transitioned to new leadership. During her tenure, she coached 22 All-America selections, 65 All-ACC honorees, and eight Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy honorees.

Overbeck has been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and Texas Sports Hall of Fame. U.S. Soccer introduced The Carla Overbeck Leadership Award to honor individuals who demonstrate leadership and collaboration, reflecting Overbeck's enduring influence on soccer in the United States.
