Byron Allen

Byron Allen is a businessman, film and television producer, and comedian. Allen is the founder of Allen Media Group, formerly known as Entertainment Studios, which operates in television production, broadcasting, film production, and digital media. His career began at age 14, when he developed his first stand-up routine and performed at comedy clubs throughout the Los Angeles area. Comedian Jimmie Walker noticed Allen's act and invited him to join a comedy writing team alongside Jay Leno and David Letterman.

At age 18, Allen made his television debut on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," becoming the youngest comedian to perform on the show. Producers of NBC's "Real People" saw Allen's debut and offered him a co-hosting role, making him part of the first reality-based program broadcast on network television.

Following his success on "Real People," Allen expanded his on-screen presence and developed his business skills. He co-wrote and co-starred in the CBS television film "Case Closed," hosted the syndicated late-night talk show "The Byron Allen Show," and toured as an opening act for musicians such as Dolly Parton, Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie, and The Pointer Sisters. Allen established CF Entertainment, later renamed Entertainment Studios and then Allen Media Group, focusing on producing non-fiction television programming. The company's first program was the syndicated talk show "Entertainers with Byron Allen." Despite early financial challenges, Allen persevered and grew the company into a major player in the media industry.

Entertainment Studios became the first African-American owned multi-platform media studio producing and distributing wide-release motion pictures and content for all platforms. Allen purchased Freestyle Releasing, now called Allen Media Group Motion Pictures, which released "47 Meters Down." Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures also released the Western "Hostiles" and the mystery-thriller "Chappaquiddick." On television, Allen hosted and produced the syndicated comedy panel show "Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen" and the game show "Funny You Should Ask."

Allen expanded his media holdings by acquiring The Weather Channel, the leading weather news television network. He partnered with Sinclair Broadcast Group to acquire 21 Regional Sports Networks from Walt Disney/FOX Corporation. Allen owns one of the largest cable network portfolios in the industry, featuring ten 24-hour HD television networks, including The Weather Channel, Comedy.TV, Cars.TV, JusticeCentral.TV, and Local Now. In 2026, he acquired a majority stake in BuzzFeed and became chairman and CEO.

Allen's work in the media industry has been recognized by Bloomberg 50, the Goldman Sachs annual Builders & Innovators Summit, NATPE's Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award, the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He received the Fred Dressler Leadership Award at the Mirror Awards. Allen also acquired an 11 percent stake in Starz Entertainment, further expanding his influence in the entertainment industry. Allen's career demonstrates the transformation of creative talent into institutional power within the American media landscape.
