Bryan Konietzko

Bryan Konietzko is an animator, writer, producer, and director recognized for his contributions to modern animation. Konietzko graduated from the Illustration Department of Rhode Island School of Design, where he began a creative partnership with Michael Dante DiMartino. He worked as a character designer at Film Roman for "Family Guy" and as assistant director for "Mission Hill" and "King of the Hill," before serving as a storyboard artist and art director for Nickelodeon's animated series "Invader Zim."

Nickelodeon later recruited Konietzko to create an original series, leading to his collaboration with DiMartino on the animated martial arts saga "Avatar: The Last Airbender." In addition to executive producing with DiMartino, Konietzko served as art director, designing main characters and drawing from his experience as a landscape painter to help shape the series' fantasy world. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" received a Peabody Award for its substantive storytelling and drew inspiration from East Asian cultures and martial arts, exploring themes such as balance, destiny, and personal growth. The series earned recognition for its animation, storytelling, and character development.

For the sequel series "The Legend of Korra," Konietzko and DiMartino co-wrote all scripts for the first season. Konietzko received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program as executive producer for "The Legend of Korra." The creative partnership between Konietzko and DiMartino is often referred to as Bryke by fans. Beyond television, Konietzko has written and illustrated the sci-fi graphic novel series "Threadworlds," published by First Second Books. He is also active in photography and music, releasing albums with his band Ginormous, including "Our Ancestors' Intense Love Affair" and "At Night, Under Artificial Light."

Konietzko and DiMartino were named executive producers and showrunners for a Netflix live-action adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Both later departed the project due to creative differences. Subsequently, ViacomCBS announced the formation of Avatar Studios, a division of Nickelodeon focused on developing new animated series and movies set in the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra" universe, with Konietzko and DiMartino serving as co-chief creative officers. Through Avatar Studios, Konietzko continues to influence the animation industry, contributing to the ongoing development of the "Avatar" franchise and animated storytelling.
