Bruce Dickinson

Bruce Dickinson is a multifaceted figure in the history of rock music, best known as the lead vocalist of British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Dickinson emerged as a prominent vocalist during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, recognized for his wide vocal range and quasi-operatic tenor. Alongside Ronnie James Dio and Rob Halford, he is considered a pioneer of the operatic vocal style that influenced power metal vocalists worldwide.

Dickinson first gained attention as the frontman for the band Samson, performing under the stage name Bruce Bruce on two studio albums before joining Iron Maiden. He replaced Paul Di'Anno and debuted with the band on the album "The Number of the Beast." During his initial tenure, Iron Maiden released a series of platinum and gold albums in the United States and United Kingdom, including "Piece of Mind," "Powerslave," "Somewhere in Time," and "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son." These records solidified Iron Maiden's status in the heavy metal genre.

Dickinson left Iron Maiden to pursue a solo career, releasing albums such as "Accident of Birth" and "The Chemical Wedding," which explored a range of heavy metal and rock styles. He later rejoined Iron Maiden, contributing to six subsequent studio albums, including "Senjutsu," which achieved commercial success in multiple countries. Since Dickinson joined Iron Maiden, the band has sold more than 100 million albums. His solo album "The Mandrake Project" has been noted for its innovative approach to heavy metal.

Beyond music, Dickinson's career spans aviation, brewing, literature, broadcasting, and sports. He has worked as a pilot and airline captain, served as Marketing Director for Astraeus Airlines, and founded Cardiff Aviation (now Caerdav), specializing in commercial aircraft maintenance and pilot training. In partnership with Robinsons Brewery, Dickinson developed the "Trooper" beer, which has received multiple awards at the British Bottlers' Institute Awards, World Beer Awards, Global Beer Masters, and International Beer Challenge. As a competitive fencer, he was ranked seventh in Britain in men's foil and trained with the British Olympic team.

Dickinson is also an author and filmmaker. His autobiography, "What Does This Button Do?," appeared on the New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction best sellers list. He has published two satirical novels, "The Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace" and "The Missionary Position." Dickinson co-authored the screenplay for the film "Chemical Wedding," in which he also contributed the soundtrack and appeared in cameo roles. He has received an honorary music doctorate from Queen Mary University of London and was named an Honorary Group Captain in the 601 (County of London) Squadron RAF.

Dickinson overcame stage three throat cancer following an intensive treatment regimen. He has spoken candidly about the possibility of his illness affecting his singing voice, highlighting his resilience and dedication to music. His recovery and continued presence in the music industry underscore a career defined by versatility and perseverance, resonating with audiences worldwide through both his musical achievements and diverse pursuits.
