Brandon Uranowitz is a Broadway actor known for his extensive stage work, screen appearances, and contributions to musical theater and drama. Uranowitz began his career in theater as a child, appearing as the Little Boy in the Toronto premiere of the musical "Ragtime," and later trained in dramatic arts through programs such as Performers Theatre Workshop and at New York University.
His first role in a major production was as an ensemble member and understudy of Mark in the national tour of "Rent," before making his Broadway debut and building a reputation as a compelling character actor.
Uranowitz joined the original cast of the stage adaptation of "An American in Paris" as composer Adam Hochberg, with the show premiering in Paris at Théâtre du Châtelet before transferring to Broadway. This performance earned him his first Tony Award nomination and a Grammy Award nomination for the original cast recording. He continued to earn recognition with performances in the first revival of "Falsettos," portraying Mendel, a psychiatrist, opposite Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, and Stephanie J. Block, which led to nominations for the Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. The New York Times described him as warmly funny and convincingly neurotic as Mendel, while Entertainment Weekly called him wholly endearing.
Uranowitz played Larry in a limited run of "Burn This" on Broadway, opposite Adam Driver and Keri Russell, earning nominations for both the Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. His screen work includes a three-episode arc on "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" as Buzz Goldberg, a Catskills activities director, and appearances in films such as the Billy Crystal feature film "Here Today." Uranowitz has demonstrated range across musicals and straight plays, comedy and drama.
Uranowitz won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for his performances as Nathan and Ludwig in "Leopoldstadt." He also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play for the same production. Speaking to Playbill, Uranowitz described "Leopoldstadt" as the most personal play he had ever done, noting the marriage of both himself as a person and as an artist on display. At one point, Uranowitz considered a different career path, enrolling in a clinical social work program focused on mental health during the pandemic, before the audition for "Leopoldstadt" brought him back to the stage.
As a child actor in the out-of-town tryout of the original "Ragtime," Uranowitz was not chosen to transfer with the show to Broadway. Decades later, he returned to the musical in a role he connected with more deeply, earning his fifth Tony nomination and his first in a leading role category. He starred as the Latvian Jewish immigrant Tateh in the Encores! revival of "Ragtime" at New York City Center, which transferred to Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater. With five Tony nominations, a Tony Award win, a Drama Desk Award, and a career defined by emotional authenticity and range, Uranowitz is recognized as a significant figure in contemporary American theater.
